Western New York natives Patrick Kane and Brooks Orpik played well in the United States' opening 7-1 victory over Slovakia.

Kane recorded a pair of assists, three shots on goal and had a plus-2 rating. Orpik, a defenseman, was a plus-3.

Kane's first assist came on Ryan Kesler's goal early in the second period, offering a quick response for the U.S. after Slovakia had tied the game at 1 just over a minute earlier.

The Sabres' Zemgus Girgensons was held off the scoresheet in Latvia's 1-0 loss to Switzerland. His Buffalo teammate Henrik Tallinder similarly had an even rating on defense for Sweden in a 4-2 victory over the Czech Republic.

Neither Sabres goaltender, Ryan Miller or Jhonas Enroth, saw action.
